Unknown Photographer, Egypt (1930s-1950s)

This photographic print was made to be sent as a postcard. It is unusual for its risqué depiction of a rather sexually extroverted young woman. The personnage, which is created entirely in the studio, is perhaps a woman of ‘lose morals’ or even a prostitute. Her sexually ambiguous image is a mixture of highly masculine props (hat, cigarette and especially, the cane) and sinuous femininity (the make-up, jewelery and the underwear). Such imagery, which played with gender roles and boundaries, was very popular in the 1930s, not only in Europe but also in the Middle East. It was strongly influenced by Hollywood cinema and its brand of modern and liberated women, played by actresses such as Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Harlow and specifically, Marlene Deithrich in the 1930 film ‘Morroco’.
