Nothing is known of E. R. Tarrant’s biography other than that he was an active member and correspondent of the Royal Photographic Society and an ardent traveller. Like many art-photographers of the 1920s & 30s Tarrant seems to have actively engaged in experimenting with various technical aspects of the medium. He is mostly known for his photographs done in the bromoil method. Although typically pictorialist in style and exceptionally crafted to resemble etchings and lithographs, his photographs of Europe and in particular, the East are unusually full of light and air in contrast to the more moody and somber aesthetic preffered by most proponents of the movement.
